Wilson's Snipe in California

Wilson's snipe (Gallinago delicata): the only shorebird California lets you hunt, with a long fall-and-winter season on the wet ground most upland hunters walk past.

Snipe are real, and the joke has kept a lot of hunters from ever finding that out. California's season runs from mid-October to the end of January, the birds winter across the state's wet pastures and marsh edges, and the flush — a single brown bird corkscrewing away low and fast, calling as it goes — is one of the hardest shots in the uplands. We haven't hunted them yet. This page is the planning sheet: the rules, the bird, and what CDFW has told snipe hunters.

2026–27 Season at a Glance

  • Dates: Saturday, Oct. 17, through Jan. 31, statewide.

  • Daily bag: eight snipe. Possession is triple the daily bag.

  • Shooting hours: one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.

  • Paperwork: a California hunting license, the upland game bird validation (not required on a junior license), and the free HIP validation — snipe are a migratory bird.

  • Shot: nonlead only, statewide.

Know the Bird

A Wilson's snipe is a plump brown-and-buff shorebird with short legs, a striped head and back, and a long straight bill. On the ground it is almost invisible. In the air it usually goes up as a single bird, gives a harsh scaipe call, and zig-zags away low — and that flush is the identification.

The reason it matters: snipe often feed alongside shorebirds that are protected, some of them long-billed and brown too. CDFW notes that snipe rarely fly in flocks — most flushes are single birds — so a group of shorebirds getting up together is a reason to hold your fire. As CDFW's upland program lead put it, "you really have to know your stuff when hunting snipe."

Where They Live in California

CDFW calls snipe well distributed across the state through the season. They use muddy pond edges, wet pastures, flooded fields, and marsh margins with low cover — the same Central Valley ground that holds ducks, which is why waterfowl hunters see more snipe than anyone. The season runs nearly in step with the Balance-of-the-State duck season. On public land, the Sacramento, Delevan, Colusa, and Sutter national wildlife refuges open portions of their hunt areas to snipe along with waterfowl and pheasant; read the complex's hunting page for days and passes.

How It's Hunted

We have no snipe days of our own. This is what CDFW told snipe hunters in its 2019 season release, and none of it has gone out of date:

  • Walk the wet edges. Snipe are found probing mud for worms and invertebrates, and hunters walk them up from low, wet cover.

  • Go light. A light upland gun, an open choke, and light loads such as No. 7 steel are CDFW's suggestion.

  • Think twice about the dog. Many snipe hunters leave the dog home, because a low, twisting bird means low shots.

  • Try again. A missed snipe will sometimes land again after a short flight.

  • Don't count on yesterday's field. Snipe move, and a good field one day can be empty the next.

CDFW also points out that snipe hunting can be good on the warm, bluebird November days when duck hunting is poor. It takes several birds to make a meal, and hunters who like dove and duck tend to like snipe.
