The review

The Perun 2 Mini blurs the line between a headlamp and a flashlight. Strap on the included headband and it's a 1,100-lumen right-angle hands-free light. Slip it off and clip it to a vest or pocket and it's a tactical-style EDC torch with magnetic tail and proximity sensor. For a NorCal upland hunter who hates carrying two of anything, that flexibility earns it a slot.

Battery is a proprietary 18650 (USB-C magnetic charging) that runs about 8 hours on the 60-lumen low setting — enough for a week of pre-dawn walks before recharging. The proximity sensor steps the brightness down when something gets close to the lens, which is genuinely useful when you're loading a vehicle and don't want to flash a 1,000-lumen burst into your own eye.

Compared to a Black Diamond Spot 400 (our beginner default), the Perun is heavier and pricier but more versatile. Compared to a Fenix HM65R (the big-lumen pick), the Perun gives up some throw distance but is dramatically more pocketable. If you already own a beginner headlamp and want one good light that handles 90% of camp-and-truck use, this is it.
