Azweilke Custom Kydex Sheath

Editor's Personal Pick — This is gear our editor carries afield.

Editor's pick: the custom-fit kydex sheath that turns a great knife into a vest-integrated tool.

Why we picked this

A premium fixed-blade knife is only as useful as its sheath. Most production knives ship with sheaths optimized for a generic carry case — leather belt loops, basic kydex with limited mounting options. Azweilke is a small custom-shop maker that builds kydex sheaths fitted to specific knife models, with mounting options that integrate with the gear hunters actually wear. After two seasons running an Azweilke sheath on a Busse Crab Trail, the editorial team won't carry premium knives any other way.

The full review

The kydex sheath problem in upland hunting is specific: the Busse Crab Trail (and MKC Speedgoat, and Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter) all ship with sheaths designed for generic belt carry. None of them integrate with strap vests, MOLLE webbing, or the small gear-attachment systems that working hunters actually use. Azweilke builds the bridge.

The custom-fit aspect is the first thing you notice. Azweilke molds each sheath to your specific knife — not a generic "Busse-shaped" sheath, but a sheath fit to the exact dimensions of the Crab Trail (or whichever model you specify). The retention is precise: the knife doesn't move when inverted, doesn't rattle when walking, and releases with a deliberate motion. Cheap kydex sheaths use foam liners or velcro retention; Azweilke uses pure kydex tension, which lasts indefinitely.

The mounting options are what justify the price. You specify how you want to carry: MOLLE/PALS for strap vest integration, Tek-Lok for belt carry, low-ride for under a jacket, scout carry for cross-body wear. Azweilke installs the appropriate hardware — stainless steel rivets, color-matched eyelets, soft-loop adapters as needed. The result is a sheath optimized for how YOU carry, not how the knife maker assumed you'd carry.

Color options range from the standard kydex offerings (black, coyote, OD, ranger green) through custom dye combinations. We typically run coyote on a Final Rise vest because the color matches; black is the safe default for any setup. Custom multi-color options are available for additional cost.

The lead time is 2-6 weeks depending on shop backlog. Azweilke is a small operation — orders queue up. Plan ahead, especially in late summer when hunters are getting kit ready for opener.

The other thing about custom kydex makers worth knowing: they vary in quality. Azweilke is in the upper tier, with consistent build quality and good communication. There are competitors (Armatus Carry, Roman's Custom Kydex, several others) that build comparably; Azweilke is who we've worked with most consistently and recommend without reservation.

What we love

  • Custom-fit to your knife — precise retention, no rattle.
  • Mounting options match your carry style — MOLLE, Tek-Lok, belt, scout.
  • Quality kydex, quality hardware — built to outlast the knife.
  • Color matching — looks intentional with vest, not bolted-on.
  • Personal customer service — small shop, direct communication.

What to know before you buy

  • Lead time is 2-6 weeks — not available off-the-shelf.
  • You provide the knife model details — Azweilke needs make/model to mold correctly.
  • Custom dye options add cost — basic kydex colors are standard; custom multi-color costs more.
  • Returns are difficult on custom items — be sure of your specifications.
  • Brand-direct only — order through their website or Instagram.
